Carla Oberth completed her B.A. in Psychology and Behavioural Science at McGill University in 2011 and received her M.A. in Psychology at New York University in 2013. Her M.A. thesis examined child-related factors affecting the implementation of evidence-based treatment modalities for behavioural problems. She is currently in her sixth year in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at Simon Fraser University under the supervision of Dr. Robert J. McMahon. Ms. Oberth’s dissertation examined long-term emotional and behavioural outcomes of direct and indirect violence exposure in youth.
Ms. Oberth has extensive assessment and treatment experience working with youth and families in school, clinic, forensic and hospital settings in New York and in British Columbia. Carla has completed a 2-year assessment-based practicum at the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre, a 1-year treatment-based practicum at BC Children’s Hospital, and 1-year treatment-based practicum at Vancouver CBT Centre. Further, she continues to carry out assessment and treatment cases through the SFU Clinical Psychology Centre. Carla has experience working with children, adolescents, and parents experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties including OCD, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, specific phobia, selective mutism, ADHD, disruptive behaviour disorders, and parenting challenges. She believes in a flexible, collaborative, and client-centred approach, using evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Behavioural Parent Training as well as including mindfulness and acceptance-based techniques. Carla emphasizes goal-setting, meeting the client where they are at, and a strong and positive therapeutic relationship. |
